  1. I cannot enter build mode from strategic mode. Entirely too much stuff forces you to leave strategic mode and automatically drops you out of it. If one of the selling points is 'can play like an RTS' then let me play like that and stop treating it as a special temporary mode. 🙂

I suggest a developer/designer try to play strategic-mode-only. And every time you have to go back into strategic mode, find that bit of code that forced you out of it and remove it. I see no usefulness in changing my game mode without me explicitly choosing to.

  2. Should be able to search without using the mouse. I should be able to tap M to open map and then just hit 'enter' or something to enter the search box, and then escape to exit the search box. Having to mouse select the input field is an extra step, and again tapping escape to try to exit the search box focus actually just drops me out of the map. 😞 I get dropped out of map and strategic mode unintentionally more than anything else.

  3. To remove a note by having to select 'add note' and clear the text and clear the icon to blank is really unintuitive. Also, why do I have to tag a sector first to add a note? I can untag the sector after and the note stays just fine even though I'm required to have tagged it first.

Probably this tagging/notes/icons system could just use a good design pass. Maybe even a list of saved sectors on the left or something.

  4. Sometimes (not always, i think) when my ship I've given a destination arrives in it's final sector, the autopilot remains on and the ship just seems to be flying in some random direction in a straight line. Once you arrive your ship should just chill. Unless it's doing something like patrolling or something, in which case understanding what it's doing so it doesn't just seem like it's flying in a random direction would be nice.

  5. The game lets me automate most things, but having to fly around and manually collect loot is the most mind numbing boring thing of all since it's literally just trying to use the screen edges with lots of camera spinning to find the loot and then flying point to point. So why is it not one of the things you can just autopilot? Let me go make a sammich while my captain collects my bounty I just enjoyed creating.

  6. I'm unclear why galaxy map mode is so different from first person or strategic mode. Why can I not open the player menu and check out my fleet and other things while on the galaxy map? The galaxy map also seems to unload the sector you're in somewhat, at least for rendering, as when dropping back out of galaxy mode it can stutter a bit trying to reload everything it seems. Especially when doing the new 2.0 captain operations, I am always having to drop in and out of galaxy map mode when I want to check even basic things like how many resources I have before I decide what mission parameters to use for a miner. If I could open the player menu in galaxy map and see my resources just like in the other modes this would make things much simpler.

  7. There is a concept of a selected sector in the galaxy map. I'm not actually sure why or what you even use this for. It actually just gets in the way and makes things more confusing. If you remove the concept of selecting a sector the map will be simpler.

There are several things you want to do on a sector, and some depend on having 1 or more ships selected first. Nothing seems to care or use what sector is selected. If you right click a sector with a ship selected it's a jump gesture. If you right click without a ship selected then it's the sector context menu. It actually moves the selected sector where you right click so it's not even useful for like marking a sector you are interested in since it has no stickiness at all.

Also, doing box select wherever your boxing mouse gesture ends becomes the new selected sector. It's just a random white box with no real function, which leads to other QOL issues. For example Escape key is sort of universal 'de-select' which works if you have a ship selected. But when I get a random sector selection due to doing a box select for example I try to de-select it with escape almost on instinct. But if I don't have a ship selected to deselect then it just drops me from the galaxy map.
