  1. 45 degree angles of very thin pieces (like wings in this case) are just incredibly hard to build...my advice: build them on 10x scale and then scale them down. They are going to have a HIGH block count though, no way around it. The further from 45 degrees you get, the fewer blocks you have to use for a given desired thin-ness and the easier it will be.   2. Thanks for necroing this and posting the cargo formula...I was wondering how that worked! Essentially the formula includes a wall thickness for cargo blocks of 0.25 that is not considered useable for cargo storage.

     

    To distill it down to more practical usage I created a little table to show block size versus cargo utilization (percentage of volume that is actually adding cargo storage)

    Cargo utilization table:

    Block size:              Percent utilized:

    1                            12.5% 

    2                            42.2%

    3                            57.9%

    5                            72.9%

    10                          85.7%

    100                        98.5%

     

    As you can see, the smaller the block size, the larger percentage of the space that "wasted". If you built a single 100x100x100 cargo bay it would use 98.5% of the space for cargo (very efficient). If however, you instead built 1,000,000  1x1x1 cargo bays (same total volume), it would only use 12.5% of the space for cargo!

     

    Going forward I'll be targeting cargo bays with a block size >5 and avoiding any cargo blocks with a size <2 at all costs!

    Pretty much like Tsunamik says: lots of edge blocks!

    I did use a small trick in that I first created my sphere (the previous ship I mentioned above). From that I created all of these round shapes by scaling the sphere (I.e. Saucer halves are flattened sphere halves with some editing; nacelle/engineering sections are cut-and-reattached layers of the sphere stretched out in the length direction). Even with tricks, creating round shapes is pretty time consuming as any little mistake shows up very clearly.

    WARNING!:All of the versions below have very good maneuverability, however what they don't have is break thrust(on purpose). It is HIGHLY recommended to use the "flip and burn" strategy depicted on the show!

     

    10:1 Scale Version: This size just "feels" right to me even though its 10x the actual size. It is very maneuverable and has enough size to make it capable of taking on a large variety of opponents. It has 6 module slots and mounting points for 6 x 1.0 turrets OR 24(!) x 0.5 turrets.

    ~5:1 Scale Version: I scaled the ship down closer to actual size, but maintained the ability to mount 0.5 size turrets. This ship is ridiculously maneuverable and still has some fighting capability. It has 3 module slots and mounting points for 6 x 0.5 turrets.

    ~3:1 Scale Version: I scaled the ship down further, maintaining the ability to mount a size 0.3 turret. The only thing this size really gains over the 5:1 version is that it is closer to the "real" ship size. I can't scale the ship any further without losing the ability to use the turret mounts even in their modified state. It has 2 module slots and mounting points for 6 x 0.3 turrets.

  5. I've found a few small bugs in build mode I'd like to report:

     

    First: when building on one ship from another ship (through the interact menu) the undo function doesn't work.

     

    Second: edge armour blocks won't properly merge (yes they're lined up and same dimensions etc).
