I'm trying to work toward the point where I can build up my faction without depending on loot and other factions' infrastructure. What do I need to do to get a reliable source of crew, upgrades, and turrets (ideally from a turret factory, so I can properly outfit my ships) from my own stations?

You really nailed the the Homeworld aesthetic. Great job. Homeworld is one of my favorite game series. And the art design is probably one of my favorite elements.

Chergan CV
Designed and produced by its titular clan, the Chergan is a multirole utility vessel able to take on cargo transport, mining, salvage, reconnaissance, and light combat duties. Its versatile, easily-configurable design has made it the general-purpose workhorse of many Khudani clans, and modified Chergans are not uncommon among smugglers and pirates.

Hi there
Steamarchievement told me to do a barrelroll in a Battleship.
What is a battleship? And what is a battlecruiser, destroyer, corvett and other classes?
Is there any overview of these? Or an other way to get my class?
I wasn't aware that the game made a distinction between classes of ship - probably by volume, but I haven't seen anything pointing to that. Maybe it has yet to be implemented?
I figure, if in doubt, build the biggest, most heavily-armed monster that you can, and that's bound to be classified as such.

The CB series are some absolutely gorgeous ships; very well modeled, and a unique aesthetic (I struggle to make anything not horribly generic-looking)

Thanks to the title, I was half expecting to see the Great White Fleet a-la Space Battleship Yamato.
I like that sleek aesthetic and the clean silhouettes. Still trying to bolster my own fleet with more than just corvettes and miners.
i'm not very good with grinding the ship, so i try to make smooth hulls like the Hiigarans
since you make some awesome homeworld-like ships
maybe a Vaygr assault frigate ? i love that ship xD

I don't art an awful lot nowadays, between 12-hour class days and a crippling addiction to Avorion, but here are some examples of things I do. The following are in reverse-chronological order (more recent stuff at the top).

2016 - Someone suggested that Space Engineers ought to have its own counterpart to barbarians in Medieval Engineers. I had this to bring to the table. Unlike wolves or spiders, they try to shoot you and steal your stuff. Also they try to dismantle anything you leave lying around.

A favorite pastime for folks in many building game communities (especially From the Depths, Space Engineers) is to develop a sort of story to tie their builds together.
Avorion seems to have a very young community, but if anyone else here has already taken to thinking about their faction lore, please dump it here because it's late and I'm bored.

I'm still mucking about in the early game, since most of my time in the game is dedicated to building ships (or trying to, anyway). There are certain arrangements for turrets that I find most suitable to certain designs, but it seems like finding the right turrets is dependent on random chance.
Are players able to produce turrets from stations they've built later in the game?
EDIT: Belay this; I just noticed a thread that specifically states that weapons can be produced by a player-owned factory station. Sorry.

1 Avorion unit is roughly 10 meters. This might not be reflected perfectly in textures, which were adjusted mostly to "just look nice".

Late reply, but that's great to hear! I'm really looking forward to this feature. Do you know if designing fighters be the same as any other ship, or will they have their own unique set of blocks (such as cockpits, forward-facing weapons, pilot life-support, etc)?

This happens to me all the time, and I think it's related to adding or removing blocks in general. There are crash logs that appear in your %appdata% Roaming/Avorion folder, like this one:
