Better looking NPC ships

Greetings. Just picked this game up and have like 100+ plus hours into it. I was wondering if there are plans (either from the game developers or the community) to create a set of plans for ships. I like the computer generated ships but it could use some creative focus. Example: the church of uliad could use rounded style ships, fighting a war against its neighbor thats uses sectoid styled ships, being supplied weapons and yrade from a thrid party who uses bird style ships.  Thiughts?

From the announcement of the upcoming alliances patch:

Custom fighter plans and Steam workshop support for ship and station plans, and entire faction sets

 

So you will at least be able to use designs of other players for AI factions.
