I also mean that they work like energy and shield generators, inertia dampers, correction nozzles, lodgings for the necessary crew (also gunners and miners), a few hyperspace cores. Hangar and cargo space need not necessarily be. I think a volume of maximal 20mill m3 for 8 upgrades is enough. Here are two links for some picture of the ships.
