We really need some AI assisted decel burns. People end up relying on thrusters way too much when it makes a lot more sense to flip and counter inertia with the main drive.
My suggestion is to enable a feature which binds to a key to automatically orient the ship opposite of the direction of travel. This way it could be held or toggled and the engines engaged so that it cancels out your movement much more quickly after a hard burn.
Another option would be to include a directional nav ball similar to Kerbal Space program.. it would allow us to more easily orient the ship in the 3 dimensional space. http://wiki.kerbalspaceprogram.com/wiki/Navball
