The AI piloting skill currently is the biggest flaw in this game.
1. when commanded to do a task. It executes it very poorly
2. Big ships controlled by the AI are almost certain to get stuck
3. AI aiming is terrible. It simply spins randomly and paired with the movement it does it becomes a total disaster!
4. the AI can only fly straight lines it seems and it needs to stop moving entirely before it can change directions.
Possibilities to improve the AIs piloting and aiming skills:
- make it so that the AI would take best orientation in order to be able to fire all guns and if not possible at least most guns.
- program the AI to fly curves such as boosting in the opposite direction midflight after doing a 180° turn
- program the AI to actually fight smart. If it has range it should try to keep a given distance and when it has other ships of its faction they should stay in a given distance to eachother since that is a tactical
advantage
- agile AI ships should stay in motion to avoid ebing hit by enemy fire( no linear movement with stop/accelerate like it currently is)
- program it to use its thrusters more efficiently. Sometimes they get stuck next to eachother because they cant move sideways with thrusters.
- program it to ignore tiny non ship / station obstacles which would prevent it from moving since it would not be able to turn otherwise.
(there probably are more flaws with the AI that I currently did not think about)
The modding community has proven to be a really Gem for this game already. Please give them access to the code for the entire AI (movement, aiming, fulfilling tasks, etc.) so that they can modify it themselves as well. Great Ideas that you might not want to add due to given reasons might still be implemented by the modding community.
