Engine Mechanics?

I cant seem to understand  how engines work. I add more engines and then the max speed goes down

Editv My mistake, that thread is about thrusters. Butbi think some similar concept apply. It has something to do with the added weight of the engines compared to the output.

if its based on surface area as well, then I screwed up my last ship. Based on testing sometimes volume matters too though...unsure

Yeah and i think positioning also effects it. Maybe how much of the actualy engine is connected to the ship because it changes sometimes just by moving the engine

Engines are not based on surface area, but just volume. Position also doesn't matter. The reason you're losing speed is probably because you're short of engineers. The game shows speed penalties because of crew shortages in build mode.

Why is it that adding more engines increases thrust, while decreasing max velocity? Is it due to the weight?

 

I filled up on engineers so i know that isnt the issue

 

Edit: wait yeah more engineers was still totally the issue
