NITROtbomb
Hello Yall, I don't know if there is a Topic for this or if this is the right section. But I'd like to maybe get a compiled list of different games/artists/other, that people use for their inspirations for ship designs. it would be great help to those who don't really know where to start or where to look for inspiration. I just think it would be good for us to broaden our horizons so to speak :) So I guess I'll start Eve Online (in game is best but Google images works) Homeworld (again google images) Fractured space (in the game right now waiting for a match lol) Thanks so much to anyone who adds to this list, you have my gratitude. DerpSuper++
Other than the many artists out there you can find with a Google search, a bunch of things right off the top of my head that aren't here are the Imperium Galactica series, Sins of a Solar Empire and Rebel Galaxy. weedworm31
just grab a piece of paper and hold a pencil lightly and start putting down random lines and see what jumps out at you as a "ship shape" and go from there. best way to get something mostly original. TehG00SE
If you want EVE ships... use http://www.caldariprimeponyclub.com/ :-p You can add grids and such, zoom in rotate, change skins, etc etc. Love it :-p
SinBad
What inspires my ships? Math. For me its all about the numbers. Big numbers that look good together. I've made some horrificly ugly monstrosities in every game I play. But when you look at their stat screens they suddenly seem beautifull.

Warrax
I have seven (7) ships in the works, which were all inspired by the Stahlvogel (eve online). So far, i have only posted one ship design - The Aegoran. I will post the Stahlvogel pic in my ship design thread tomorrow. Cheers

This. Although it becomes harder/takes longer to figure out the details that make it go from "looks like a ship" to "looks really good".
lmss1994
well when i need a base idea for ship design i go to an art web site and search for space ship, but i try always to create something different from that base idea. The art website i use is:https://www.pinterest.com As for games and other forms of entertainment you can use as inspiration: Star Wars Battlestar Galactica Star Track Stargate Warhammer 40k Dropfleet commander Halo Eve online Homeworld Fractured space Everspace Dreadnought . . . Chronicles of Riddick (2º movie)
Warrax
I posted two of my inspirational sources in my Creations thread The Stadtvogel and the Jackal http://www.avorion.net/forum/index.php?topic=2539.msg13053#msg13051
Silverflame
For the ship that I have put up here I used the game Colony Wars for inspiration. Other than that I prefer an almost star destroyer or just a spiky overall look to spread out weapon platforms. Here is the ship I based one of mine on, the hydra. Ohm is Futile
Colony wars, aah, the nostalgia! I don't really like building off existing designs, though... but I guess my designs could use some... inspiration. Anyways, to add to the list: Freelancer (came up a few times already, but hey, it's missing here) Endless Space Star Conflict Starpoint Gemini Evochron Mercenary Escape Velocity ...probably forgetting a bunch of other space games and shows but that's all I could think of off the top of my head... AURAequine
Star Citizen is a great place for inspiration too, they have a LOT of ships.. I'd probably start with recreating a Mustang Alpha, but then maybe an M50.. If I kept them to scale though, I wonder how big the Freelancer would be then :/
Ohm is Futile
Freelancer ships are incredibly small for most part, with the only exception being the capital ships, which you couldn't fly without mods. That said, I'd say even the capital ships were kinda small. Actually, it's kinda hard to say, ships were HUUUUGE compared to planets, but if you look at the cockpits, they're freaking small. FrAvatar
I posted this in another thread, but as far pic references for Homeworld Ships, I've been using this video. gives you a sense of scaling, and plenty of ships to choose from, from tiny fighters, to corvettes, Frigates, Destroyers, Cruisers, Carriers and bigger capital\Mother Ships. Having the ship length in feet/meters helps with getting ship scale right. A size 0.2 block has sides that are one meter. so a size 1 block is 5 meters, and a size 2 block is 10 meters. Makes it easier to get scaling right. On a side note, following the sizes from that video, I'm attempting to re-create the Turanic Ion Array Frigate, and so far I've got the internals mostly placed, and the general shape of the ship down, I just need to finish off the outer hull shaping, and I'm very close to other in game stats, as it's stated that the ship is 13k tonnes, and currently my unfinished build is sitting at 11k tonnes. I thought it was pretty cool how the weight seemed to work out as well ( wasn't even trying to match weight)
LeonserGT
For anyone, who's looking for inspiration... Me and my friend already made a similar guide for Space Engineers, which is actually just arts vault, so it can be also used for Avorion as well, enjoy: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=412587437

SinBad
Dont forget that a warship shaped like a rifle tends to look more agressive. Dont believe me? Play halo.
Warrax
Here is the CSS Archer (from Renegades, I think). I love the look of this ship ... but I am not going to take this one on. At the moment, I am working on a massive, Interceptor Tie Fighter with 15 upgrade slots. I think there may have been a few millenium falcons done, but here is a sketch for anyone who wants to tackle another version. Cheers
