If you're using Linux, make sure you dont have any Windows Line Endings in your config files. Furthermore, check if all ports are correctly opened. If they aren't, steam can't connect to your server, resulting in obvious errors

Thanks!  While that wasn't the issue it did put me on the path to finding what it was.  I've never opened the config file on anything but VIM so I knew that wasn't it, but I noticed the rconIp= was blank, and I don't think the game was parsing the config file past that point.  After filling in the IP of the machine, everything worked fine again.

 

It is working now.  Also, for some reason the devs are using the 32 bit steamclient.so in the linux version of this game which causes issues on x64 machines.  This is also easy enough to overcome after every patch by simply copying the steam/linux64/steamclient.so to the avorion root directory.
